LGBTQ+ Community Academy

Purpose

To strengthen relationships between LMPD and the LGBTQ+ community through mutual education and understanding
To dispel myths, reduce bias, and build empathy between law enforcement and community members
To demonstrate LMPD’s proactive commitment to inclusion and procedural justice
To increase community confidence in reporting crimes, especially hate crimes or bias related incidents

Program Overview

Duration: 5 Tuesdays and the 6^th Tuesday is graduation.
Time: 6 pm –9 pm
Facilitator: LMPD Equity & Diversity Manager, LMPD presenters, and outside supporters
Location: TBD
Participants: 20-25 LGBTQ+ community members and allies

Curriculum

Week 1

Introductions of participants and staff
Open discussion with Command Staff
LGBTQ+ history (outside presentation)

Week 2

Human Relations Commission of Human Rights (outside presentation)
LMPD Legal Department

Week 3

Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)
Victims Services Unit (VSU)
Police Athletic League (PAL)

Week 4

Recruitment and Selection
Missing children/adult

Week 5

Homicide
Professional Standards Unit (PSU)
Public Integrity Unit (PIU)

Week 6 Graduation

Mayor, Chief of Police, and Command Staff to attend
Outside presenters - Fairness Campaign, Pride
