She Serves: Exploring Careers in Law Enforcement

The She Serves: Exploring Careers in Law Enforcement program will  introduce women to the various facets of law enforcement, inspiring curiosity and potential interest in pursuing careers in the Louisville Metro Police Department.   

It will be a seven week program with a graduation ceremony on the 8th week. 

During the seven weeks, program participants will learn about the various aspects of the Louisville Metro Police Department. Meetings will be once a week in the evenings from 6 - 9 pm. It will be in August and September.

It will be limited to 30 - 35 participants so that we can ensure personalized attention and effective training.

This program is taught by LMPD Officers and Professional Staff.


Curriculum

Week 1 Introduction to LMPD

  • Introduction to the program and what to expect 
  • Overview of LMPD’s mission, structure, and career paths
  • Presentation by the Chief of Police and female leaders within LMPD
  • Participants Introduction and why their interest

 Week 2 Legal Framework and civil Engagement

  • Workshop on the legal system, focusing on laws particularly relevant to police work.
  • Discuss the Ride along program
  • Louisville Metro Police Foundation

 Week 3 Self-defense

  • Practical self-defense training tailored for women, led by trained professionals in law enforcement.
  • Tips on personal safety and situational awareness. (empowerment)

 Week 4 Domestic Violence/ Victim services/OSPI- Office of Sexual and Physical Investigations

  • Domestic Violence: How LMPD responds to domestic violence calls, highlights the warning signs of abuse, and empowers women with tools to seek help and support others safely.
  • Victim Services: Learn about the resources and assistance available to victims of crime, including crisis counseling, legal advocacy, and how to access immediate support through LMPD’s Victim services.
  • Office of sexual and Physical Investigations: this session provides an inside look at how LMPD investigates cases of sexual and physical assault with sensitivity and professionalism, ensuring survivors are treated with dignity and justice is pursued.

 Week 8 Graduation

  • Networking opportunity with other female officers and all presenters

Ride Along experience

  • Participants paired with female officers, as much as possible, for a ride along to experience a shift firsthand. 
  • Group will divided into 8 sections for each of the 8 LMPD Divisions (there will be 2 in each division for 2 weekends)  

An added feature will be the networking opportunities that will occur at each class session.
